Unable to come to a consensus on who to appoint to the vacated City Council seat, the City council has asked the Circuit court to select seventh member.  The three candidates selected for interviews were Evelyn Powers, Trish White-Boyd and Kathy Cohen.  You may ask - why did they not hold a special election?  Unfortunately, a special election cannot be called if there are less than 2 years on the term (which expires December 31, 2026).  The Circuit Court Judge (James Swanson) will work with his 4 colleagues to make the appointment sooner than later.  Roanoke Rambler article.  Cardinal News article.  Roanoke Times article.

Roanoke City Council received eleven statements of intent from residents interested in serving in the role. After reviewing the submissions, City Council selected Kathy S. Cohen, Evelyn W. Powers, and Patricia White-Boyd to proceed to the interview stage. Interviews will be conducted on Monday, February 3, at 11:00 a.m. in the City Council Chamber, following the 9:00 a.m. informal session.
